Construction first began in 1882 and remains incomplete; it is meant to be finished by 2026. Even so, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica, as distinct from a cathedral, which must be the seat of a bishop. Then continue to Paseo de Gracia, an elegant avenue in the heart of Barcelona where you'll find the Casa Lleó Morera, the Casa Amatller, the Casa Batlló and the Casa Milá (La Pedrera), four jewels of modernist architecture. Admire the Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter which narrow medieval streets take to the world famous Ramblas, the best place to watch Barcelona's bustling life. Pass by the Columbus Monument at the old port, which has been remodeled into a recreational area, and Espanya Square before heading to the top of Montjuic Hill, with its parks, museums and the 1992 Olympic Ring and spectacular views over the city.

You'll embark on a guided walking tour that can be likened to taking a journey back in time to discover the historic city center, finding Roman remains and medieval palaces in the heart of Barcelona. After visiting the Plaça de Sant Jaume, the current seat of local and regional government, you'll be able to enjoy unique landmark sites such as the Plaça del Rei, the historic powerhouse of medieval Catalonia; the Jewish Quarter, El Call; the cathedral, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Barcelona; and the Roman walls, important remains of which survive today. After the tour, visit La Boqueria market, famous for the quality and diversity of products on sale from all over the world, a place well worth visiting. The best way to feel its special atmosphere is to stroll around the stalls with fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, and pop into its bars and restaurants to enjoy the mixture of sounds, aromas and flavors.
